News Values Operating in News Stories

BBC WEEKEND NEWS

The News that I am using for this analysis is the BBC Weekend News broadcasted on the 13/04/2013, lasting around 18 minutes. I will talk about the news values from Galtung and Ruge on each of the stories reported on.

The first news story was the North Korea Crisis. This particular news story has has a big threshold as it is a important and big news story effecting a country. This news story also has continuity, and has already been reported on before- therefore, making this story a development. This could also be linked to Elite Nation, which means that the countries included in this news story are more newsworthy than other countries. This is because this story doesn't just include North Korea- but also China and America, which links in with the composition of the news (being international). There also seems to be a lot of coverage and pictures which adds to the visuality of the news. There are interviews, footage from Korea, footage from talks etc. both old and new. There is also a lot of negativity in this story, but this makes the story more meaningful for the audience and also more newsworthy. Because of all these news values put together, this is why the story has been reported first and is the 'most important'.

The second story was about the Prime Minister reading from the Bible, Linking to Margaret Thatcher's Death. Just like the first news story this story also has a big threshold. Similarly, the story has also been reported for a while, meaning that there is continuity in this story. This story could also link back to the unexpectedness of Margaret Thatcher's death (a major event). In contrast to the first news story, instead of it being a Elite Nation is it an Elite Persons, meaning that the people included in this news story are more newsworthy. The people in this news story, mainly being the daughter, Carol Thatcher, is being shown individually giving the story personalisation. Again, these two first news stories have been negative which is really making the news more interesting for the audience, also shown by the footage of the 'protests'. The story also being heavily related to politics may make the story more newsworthy.

The third story reported on is about David Cameron and the German Chancellor Agreeing to Work Together to Make the EU more Competitive and Flexible. Just like the previous, this story also relates to politics. Again it is focusing on Elite Persons, David Cameron and the German Chancellor, which is making the story more newsworthy as they are important persons. There is also an interview during the news with Political Correspondent, Ian, who explains the significance of this, and therefore also makes the story more interesting the viewers as we are receiving another opinion and more information. These past two stories are corresponding with the first, international news story as it is more national.

The fourth story was about the Retrial being for Former Egyptian President Ending in Chaos. The main news value for this story is the unexpectedness as seen from the word 'chaos'. The basic story is the judge withdrawing from the case, which is the unexpected element which there is also footage of later, increasing the visuality news value for this story. There is also consonance as the event included some violence. After having the two previous stories being national, there is now more composition and you can see that there is balance between the national and international stories being reported. This story is focusing on a individual person (the former Egyptian President) meaning that there is personalisation, once again. As there has been for the stories so far, there has been a lot of coverage.

Back to a national story, the fifth is about More Than 2000 Children in North Wales Being Given the MMR Vaccine. This story may be important and meaningful to the audience if they are viewing from Wales and have young children, and this could effect them strongly. This could be very unexpected news as it is a very sudden case that people may not of realized before. This is also has a rather big threshold as it is effecting many people and children nationally.

The next story, being the sixth, is about Detectives Investigating the Deaths of a 34 Year Old Woman and Her Daughters which is just mentioned. There is no coverage for this story making it a very short update. However, this is the first story that has frequency as it 'fits' in with the cycle of news production, as it is a murder. This is yet another negative story.

The seventh story is yet about more unexpected deaths nationally, it being about Police Releasing the Details about 4 family members Deaths from a Car Crash. Again, this story has frequency as it is about surprising deaths and in this case been caused by a car crash. Just like the last, the story was very short but still surprising and national. However, there was only just a photograph shown from the event meaning that the story wasn't very well covered.

The eighth story is about the Conflict in Syria which is in their 3rd year. It is mentioned suddenly that 70,000 people have  lost their lives, which makes the threshold big and the story surprising and unexpected. There is good coverage as there is an exclusive broadcast from Syria, and also interviews from children from Syria involved. There are many surprising elements to this story as many young people have been arrested/tortured or even killed for certain graffiti. It is mentioned that many of these young people have been traumatized by the conflict, therefore spreading much negativity from this story although at the end, the news readers says that "the spirit from these children has survived". This is again showing the composition of the news program as this is another international story.

-THE NEXT NEWS STORIES ARE FROM THE SPORT SECTION-

First story in the sports section is about the FA Cup, where 10 fans were arrested. There is footage of the violence, as people fought security staff and each other. Again, just like most of these news stories, they are rather sudden and unexpected. There is also consonance in this story as it fits with the media expectations, as it includes violence.

-Premiere League information-
-Scottish Cup Information-

After some small information there is a story about Tiger Woods Serving a Penalty. There is much footage included showing that he broke the rules, which could be unexpected to the audience. This includes personalisation as it is about one particular person and therefore makes this person an elite person. Having these sports stories within the news also relates to the composition of the show, and balancing the news out.

-Information about Lewis Hamilton, in the China Cup-

-END OF SPORT SECTION-

Finally, after the sport, one more story is reported on. This story is about Investigations on the Plane Carrying More than 100 passengers Missed Runway and Crashed into the Sea. This particular story has the most unexpectedness new value. There is some footage/coverage of the scene, but overall not too much. Also, this story isn't completely negative as nobody was killed, and only 22 were injured. The meaningfulness of this story could be quite high depending on how much it relates to particular people in the audience.
